The heiress (project 3 - part 7)
Throughout my process I’d started to work with more and more different media and techniques. This approach really excited me, but it also meant I would have to work harder to make everything work as a whole. One of my main inspirations for daring to choose this approach was the way in which Laura Carlin illustrated Ted Hughes’ book The Iron Man. Carlin not only combines a myriad of techniques but also plays with the layout of this well known story and turns it into something I feel is a chapter/picture book hybrid. A hybrid form that I am trying to aim for as well with The Heiress.
To figure out the design of the book I made mock-ups with a selection of images I’d done so far.
I felt quite happy with the design I’d chosen. My intention is to make The Heiress into a combination of a historical 1920’s and a more ambiguously modern style to amplify a sense of mystery whilst still feeling contemporary. This then shows in the imagery, the chosen palette as well as the font.
