Midnight Monster (project 4 - part 8)

During the final review Katherina Manolessou’s main feedback was that I should clean up the folding lines in my collagraph prints for Midnight Monster. Though I certainly understood that these lines could be seen as distracting, they were also an integral part of the printing process I had been using for the last couple of months and had grown quite fond of them as part of the images. Nevertheless, this feedback pointed out that showing the technique this deliberately might not benefit my images in the end.

It’s a good thing I am quite confident using Photoshop because it would have been impossible to redo all the prints with different printing plates and still get the same result as I do by using milk cartons. Only the texture of these milk cartons can create just the right tonal range of medium grey and black. Using mounting board for instance results in dark grey and black (see the collagraph print of the zoo in post 23), while using a product like enviromount results in a more stark black and white.

After reworking the images, I found they did not feel that different from the previous versions. As this was my main worry, I now feel fully comfortable going with a more polished final version.
