Project 2: Nightmare sequence
Inspiration
As a child I had the most vivid nightmares. I always dreaded to go to bed. Every night falling asleep felt like I was jumping off a cliff. This concept formed the starting point trying to develop imagery from my own memories.
I had difficulty deciding if this sequence should feature a girl modelled after my younger self or if I should make it an immersive experience. Placing the reader in my shoes.
I had to be careful not to make the project too personal because I wanted my prospective audience to be able to engage with the images themselves. Collaging helped me to create some distance and visualize a more universal nightmare world.
Inspired by the fun I had experimenting with monoprint during the spoonbill project I decided to use this technique again with this project.
Interestingly enough the outcomes were very different from the spoonbill project. The soft edges had been replaced by harder ones and the colour scheme had an ominous tone to it. Important sources of inspiration were Dadaist art, the Wizard of Oz and the films of George Melies, leading to the following artwork:
