Loose drawings, building up images and mark making
My first instinct was to go back to my sketchbooks. To go out (or at this point during lockdown to watch films and/or YouTube) and draw to see what would happen if I tried to draw more intuitively. I started drawing with crude lines, big marks, bold colours and most importantly planning out the buildup of my image by starting out with blocks of colour to mark the where houses, bushes, roads - or anything big - would go. Whatever approach I used I always started out with blind drawing to make sure I didn’t start overthinking it.
I had a lot of fun and filled a whole A5 sketchbook within a week. I was even pleased with most of the images I had made. This was definitely a first. But when I started a new sketchbook with the same approach, all the drawings turned out poorly. I wasn’t invested anymore and it was time for a new step.
